Recently, I enjoyed encountering the queer thinking of philosopher Jack Halberstam. In his book The Queer Art of Failure (2011), he articulates the idea that in a capitalist world that demands success, failure allows us to live our own lives and not the expectations or fantasies of others. The principle of “success” is even more difficult to apply to motherhood. There are days when just brushing my teeth is a success!
Issue No. 10 of Gaze Magazine, entitled The Art of Deception (June 2025), speaks directly to me. With all due respect to some people and myself, the perfect mother is a myth. It's a refuge from anxiety, a place to hide from the disasters of our society and have a scapegoat. So, from there, I am the mother I can be.
