... the artist takes the opportunity to explore a more formal aspect of her work, playing with textures and materials.
It was during a visit to Venice that she discovered the «Pièta» (1460) of Cosmè Tura. The silhouette appealed to her, prompting her to recreate it herself through a photomontage by posing both the Virgin and Christ. This form becomes a pretext for an exercise in style, varying the types of surface to see how the material can influence our perception of the subject.
The woolen Pièta was the first in her series, the making of pompons reflecting a personal meditative process for the artist that she wished to incorporate into her work. The waxed canvas and kitschy cherries that adorn it humorously evoke the baroque gilding of the original subject, while the synthetic fur invites us to consider the work in tactile as well as visual terms.
In this ongoing series of tapestries, a common thread connects them: a use of so-called «poor» materials, contrasting with a historical subject associated with sumptuous settings.
By diverting everyday objects through variations of various textures, the artist pushes us to apprehend under a new angle the ordinary materials which surround us.
